Springs Fire Tops 10,000 Acres As Red Flag Conditions Persist Statewide

UPDATE: Dry winds and hot temperatures are fanning fires throughout the Southland.

Glendale: A wind-whipped fire in Glendale is forcing school and neighborhood evacuations. The blaze, which broke out near the interchange between the Glendale (CA-2) and Ventura (CA-134) Freeways. The interchange was shut down, and nearby Glenoaks Elementary School was evacuated. Air attack crews have been called in to assist firefighters on the ground battling the blaze.

Ventura Co.: Meanwhile, the 18,000 acre Springs Fire in Ventura Co. has reached the ocean and is threatening Malibu.

The blaze, which started Thursday a small grass fire near Camarillo, was still only 20% contained as of late Friday afternoon. Mere than 4,000 homes are threatened by the Springs Fire, which last night crackled over the coastal mountains and reached the Pacific Coast Highway. A lengthy stretch of PCH remains closed to traffic. High-priced homes in Hidden Valley and Malibu are threatened and several horse ranches have been evacuated.

So far, there have been no injuries, either to firefighters or civilians. Fifteen homes and five commercial buildings have been damaged, but none have been destroyed. More than 1,000 firefighters are on the incident, and strike teams are being called in from throughout California.

Riverside: The Summit Fire in Riverside Co. has grown to more than 3,000 acres, fanned by Santa Ana winds gusting to more than 40 mph. Hundreds were evacuated from the city of Banning, though as of this morning, CAL FIRE reported that evacuation orders had been lifted. At last report, the blaze was listed as 65% contained. Nearly 700 firefighters are on scene. There have been two minor injuries, and one structure was destroyed.

As the fires rage on, the National Weather Service offers little relief. Red Flag Warnings have been issued up and down the state, from Eureka to San Diego. Additional resources -- normally not added until June -- were deployed last month to address the threat.
