Massive Springs Fire Approaches Containment With No Homes Lost
Rain and cooler temperatures provided a much-needed break for firefighters battling the 28,000 acre Springs Fire in Ventura County. But the real miracle may have been the work of the firefighters themselves.
The blaze, which started Thursday a small grass fire near Camarillo, is 95% contained, a far cry from wind-blown inferno facing the state last week.
At its height, more than 4,000 homes were threatened by the Springs Fire, which crackled over the coastal mountains and reached the Pacific Coast Highway. A lengthy stretch of PCH was closed to traffic and high-priced homes in Hidden Valley and Malibu were threatened . Thousands were evacuated safely from their homes.
Weather has helped firefighters win most of the recent battles, and full containment is expected by Tuesday afternoon. But even when the fire was at its peak, the more than 1,000 firefighters on scene helped keep the fire from destroying any homes. Only ten out buildings have been lost. Six commercial structures suffered damage, but none were destroyed.
Eight firefighters were injured in the battle, but no civilians suffered any injuries. PCH has been reopened and most evacuation orders have been lifted.
