CPF Legislative Wrap-Up: 2012 Session

The 2011-2012 Legislative Session ended on the cusp of midnight last Friday night, capping a turbulent year ringed by a volatile political and economic climate.

In a flurry of last-night activity, lawmakers sent Gov. Jerry Brown a major reform of the workers’ compensation system, as well as a pension measure that rolls back benefits for the next generation of public workers.

California Professional Firefighters’ legislative agenda enjoyed success in the final days of the session, capping a productive year, given the difficult times. Successes at the finish included SB 488, a measure that will protect the firefighter image from being improperly appropriated by professional slate-card operators. Also winning favor was AB 2451 – a measure that closes a loophole that kept some deserving surviving families from getting survivor benefits.

In addition to the successful legislation, CPF also won assurances from Gov. Brown that new regulations covering Emergency Medical Responder training would not be unfavorable to CPF members. However, the clock ran out on efforts to negotiate a compromise covering ALS transportation rights (201 rights). Local government organizations also stonewalled an effort to tighten up legislation designed to review municipal bankruptcy filings.
